Climbing Seven Summits For Charity: Kilimanjaro

I am climbing Seven Summits for charity and need your help to save the African elephants. Read more about the cause and how you can help.

Some of you might already know that I am on a mission. Apart from travelling the world, I am also on a quest to climb the seven summits, fundraising for a different charity before each peak. Before I get ahead of myself, this is a long-term project and I hope to have completed all of the seven highest peaks in ten years time-ten years mainly due to the costs involved.

I will be attempting my first of the seven summits in Africa as soon as 2018. I will climb Mount Kilimanjaro for David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust. Animal welfare and conservation is something I am very passionate about and with the latest from Donald Trump, wanting to legalise ivory export from Africa, my passion has turned into fury.

Each day around 100 elephants are slaughtered in Africa according to UN. Elephant numbers have dropped 62% over the last decade. As of 2011, the world is losing more elephants than the population can reproduce, threatening the future of African elephants across the continent.

Bull elephants with big tusks are the main targets and their numbers have been diminished to less than half of the females. Female African elephants have tusks and are also killed, which has a terrible effect on the stability of elephant societies, leaving an increasing number of orphaned baby elephants. As of 2017, there are still more African elephants being killed for ivory than are being born.

David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust in Kenya not only saves and conserves the habitat, but they also rescue orphaned elephants and rhinos to later rehabilitate them back in the wild. Their anti-poaching project operates mobile de-snaring and anti-poaching units formed to meet the challenges threatening the wildlife and environment of the Tsavo National Parks (20,812kmsq).

Today the DSWT deploys eight full-time anti-poaching units, which patrol the sensitive boundaries of the greater Tsavo Conservation area (48,656kmsq) on foot and by vehicle, whilst working deep within Tsavo East and West National Parks, the Chyulu Hills National Park, the Kibwezi Forest Reserve and bordering private and community ranches in pursuit of illegal activities. These skilled frontline teams, which are equipped with vehicles, camping equipment, radios, GPS’s and cameras, are making a significant difference in deterring, prosecuting and preventing poaching snaring and other crimes within this huge wildlife habitat.

Every month each unit confiscates countless snares, destroys numerous charcoal kilns and poaching structures, whilst arresting many poachers and wildlife offenders. The DSWT’s Aerial Surveillance Unit works in tandem with these ground patrol teams so as to achieve these results, whilst working together with the DSWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Veterinary Unit in locating and treating a rising number of elephants and other wild species injured through poaching and bush-meat snaring activities.

All of this gave me an idea. I would love to help keep all these programs running, but I also know how hard it is to fundraise. I used to make jewellery for friends and family when I lived in Estonia and thought to combine the two. I will be selling elephant themed earrings, necklaces, chokers, bracelets and watches, most of which I have put together myself and will be donating all the profits to David Sheldrick’s Wildlife Trust. I am not just asking for your money, I would love you to have something in return. Having a warm, fuzzy feeling after donating for a cause is great, but wouldn’t it be even better to have a fancy accessory to remind you of that? I have been wearing one of the watches I am selling to work for a month now and at least once a day, someone compliments it!

I would love for all of you to join me in my efforts to fundraise for this worthy cause by buying something from me. Christmas is not far away, so why not grab a bargain for your friends and family! As mentioned earlier, all profits will be donated directly to David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust during my trip to Africa early next year.

PS! I will be paying for my own expenses, so everything raised will be donated.

I will of course keep you up to date with the fundraising progress and will cover visiting the Wildlife Trust and climbing Kilimanjaro in my blog.

To buy for donation, check out the Shop For Charity page I have set up or contact me via Facebook or email me at kreete.tokman@gmail.com. The postage fees are still something I am working out so if they seem like too much, then they probably are! I will return your money left over from packaging and posting via PayPal or you can opt to have it go towards the donation as well. Once I have sent a few packages, I will try and alter the postage fees to be more accurate.

To keep the costs down, I have opted to feature only nine items on my Shop For Charity page and will be rotating them once they get sold. For more stock, scroll down below. If you spot something you like, but it’s not being sold in my shop, just send me an email with the item name and your postal address and we will go from there.

I am happy to say I am not alone in this, as celebrities like Ellen have also decided to shine a light on this topic. Ellen will also be donating to David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust and you can read more about it from here.

Thank you everyone in advance for your support! Let’s smash my goal of $5000!
