Grand Canyon And Clifftop Hike

Hiking solo in the Grand Canyon in Australia's Blue Mountains has been one of the greatest adventures. With breathtaking views and endless stairs, come and find out more!

Before you get right into reading this, no this is not a hike about THE Grand Canyon, but a hike in the Australia’s famous canyon in the Blue Mountains. Now as you know me, any excuse to go hiking is a good excuse and when Justyna invited me to the Blue Mountains with her friend, I knew I had to go. I, however, didn’t expect her to sleep in and not show up at all, but as I was already geared up ready to go I decided to take on the challenge and go solo.

This was my first time ever going hiking to a remote area outside Sydney all by myself. I was pondering about which track to take and really wanted to climb Mount Solitary-a remote and challenging track for experienced bushwalkers only. The weather forecast didn’t agree with me as it was meant to rain and because of the track being rated hard, remote and involving exposed rock scrambling with both hands and feet, I decided to leave it for another time when I’m not by myself. A smart cookie, this one! I might have to find someone through Travello for this if Justyna keeps sleeping in. (Not the first time!)

My second option was the Grand Canyon walk and I wasn’t disappointed. I got off the train in Blackheath where I took a 5 minute bus ride closer to the starting point of my hike at Evans Lookout road, 1.4 km before the actual lookout. From the small car park on the side of the road my adventure had begun. It had taken me close to four hours and two lost companions to get to this point from my house in Sydney so I was eager and took off with great pace.

Going down the zigzagging stairs and descending half-way into the canyon came with ease. I mean, who wouldn’t like going downhill more than uphill? This might be something I will have to reconsider before hiking up to Everest Base Camp in a matter of weeks. The track follows along a creek that has carved out the overhanging sandstone ledges looking over me. Getting deeper in the canyon, massive ferns appear, some of the size of trees! It feels like I’m in a eucalyptus rainforest. Wait a minute; this is exactly where I am!

Further on the track, the sandstone cliffs get covered with moss while entertaining the waterfalls that plunge over the cliffs above me. I go past an entry point deep into the canyon, only for abseilers with proper equipment and instructions. This makes me wish I joined a group to do it after my experience absailing down of vertical limestone cliffs in Estonia. Needless to say I was terrified. Ha! Grand Canyon with its seemingly endless bottom would be a great experience, I’m sure! Not long after, I started hearing voices coming from the void below and there they were! The smarter, richer and braver crowd that had booked a group tour in advance. Extreme sport wasn’t my goal for the day, but getting fit to hike to Everest Base Camp was.

I was flying through the track, through tunnels in the rock, past injured hikers and even with all the stops I had to make for all the beautiful photos, I reached yet another creek crossing that simply blew my mind away. I was here! At the bottom of The Grand Canyon I had seen so many amazing photos about. I felt like a tiny speck in between the overhanging cliffs and the powerful waterfalls greeting me at every turn. At this very moment, I wished to have someone to share this with. Sure, I wasn’t alone with all the passing tourists on the track, but I still wanted to point it out to someone and share my amusement about this unworldly place. This might also be why I hardly ever go traveling solo.

When I cheered about going down the hill, I was secretly hoping I wouldn’t have to go back up. This is where the laws of physics and Mother Nature kick me in the guts and laugh at me like Nelson Muntz from The Simpsons. There and then is when a crazy race started, me against myself trying to conquer all the stairs that came my way. The logic was, the quicker I go up the quicker I’ll be done with the stairs. A voice in my head said the quicker you go, the less tired you will be. How wrong was that voice! This is why I need a companion, to silence my stupid self for giving me poor advice. I went up over 100 flights of stairs before completing the hike to Evans Lookout with some amazing views over the lush valley. From the two hours spent on track, the last 40 minutes was up the stairs. What a great workout that was! The 5 km long track normally takes 4-5 hours to complete and is easier done from the other end. I am not complaining though, I know why I am doing this and getting to see the stunning view in the end was a reward itself.

Completing the trail so fast and not even feeling tired, I decided to go on another 3 km Cliff Top Walk instead of walking back to the train station straight away. It felt a bit too easy, going back already having spent over 3 hours on public transport just for a two hour hike. I was sure the next hike would be an easy one as it was just following the top of the cliff line. Oh how wrong I was! It started gently with amazing views of the Grose Valley below, but I realised quite quickly that my luck had turned once again with endless stairs waiting for me to climb them.

There was a lot of life on the trails too starting from spiders around every corner to different bugs and lizards. The area is great for birdwatching, as yellow-tailed black cockatoos and king parrots call this area their home. Passing through dense, windswept heathland on the Cliff Top walk, walking past she-oaks, banksias and stunted mallee scrub was becoming a welcoming scene. On my way up yet another treacherous set of stairs, I almost got a heart attack from an encounter with a venomous brown snake, also known as the common brown. It wasn’t very happy to share the stairs with me and decided to raise its head and slither towards me as I was making my way past it, unaware of its existence. A few jumps and screams later the little fella took off leaving me shiver and jump over every movement made by the many lizards in the scrub. If I would have gotten bitten, going solo would have had its concequences.

The first two kilometres went quick with the amazing views just on my right and I ended up at a lookout on a big rock ledge. Little did I know this was almost the end of the beautiful views and a start of another one hundred flights of stairs. Come on! Crossing over a stream with a family playing in it, it was awesome to later see the waterfall it created falling over the high cliff for 180 metres. Last set of amazing views in Govetts Leap and I was ready to head back home after conquering the 40 minute walk from the lookout to the Blackheath train station. I was knackered, but would do it all over again any time!
