Happy Coach to Nimbin

A trip to Byron Bay is not complete without visiting the hippie capital of Australia-Nimbin. For my third time to Nimbin I joined a day trip with Happy coach and Princess Fiona.

On my third visit to Nimbin, I was determined to show Luka the once sleepy dairy village turned into a hippie capital of Australia. We were staying in Byron Bay and didn't have transport of our own as we were travelling by air, trains and coaches. This is why I decided to book us on the Byron Happy Coach for a day tour in Nimbin. The booking was handled by our friendly hostel staff at Cape Byron YHA. (Luka's first time in a hostel and my best experience with hostels so far in terms of cleanliness, location, staff and value for money.)

Our day started early when you think about the jet lag Luka was facing and to put things into perspective, 9:45 am when on holiday hours might as well be 6 am at a normal time. We were picked up from our hostel with an awesome looking hippie bus and greeted by our friendly bus driver and tour guide Princess Fiona and her top hat wearing cat Jerry. Jerry was the sweetest thing that day and if I could I would have packed him to come home with me in a heartbeat.

We made a few more stops before departing, ensuring everyone gets picked up from their accommodations. As not uncommon, some people never turned up and we lost precious time to spend in Nimbin, waiting for them. With a 20 minute setback, we were on our way to our first stop - Killen Falls. The great thing about Happy Coach is that they show you around the hinterlands as well rather than just drop you off and take you back.

A short stroll and we were on a viewing platform looking down on a beautiful waterfall surrounded by cave-like walls closing in on the pool beneath. There were a few people down there swimming and playing in the waterfall. Cliff jumping is not advised however, as the water on the bottom is only about waist deep. Princess Fiona was walking Jerry on a leash and I must say this cat is so calm, letting her do almost anything to him from wearing a top hat to being carried in a blanket or walked on a leash. They must really have a special bond and it gave me a heartthrob watching them.

From there we drove to Eltham Hotel-a classic country pub in the Northern Rivers Hinterland. The pub is located near an old railway and just off the main road between Lismore and Bangalow. Established in 1902, the restaurant uses local produce and prides itself with supporting low food miles, local business and cooking with seasonal ingredients. Love it! We grabbed a few drinks to enjoy and went on discovering the old railway line.

Around midday our tour continued towards Nimbin and with a fair way to drive from Byron, we were sitting down in the Nimbin Hotel-the only "pub" in the village by 1 pm. Very different from my last visit during the Mardigras when the sleepy village turns into a three day festival with live music, hempolympics and cannabis rally, it was nice to be back!

After a drink we found ourselves strolling on the main street, popped in to a few quirky shops, the H.E.M.P Embassy and the Visitor Information Centre along with my favourite bookshop Preceptio where they sell everything from crystals and books to tarot cards and jewelry. I love their collection of books and last time I was there, I scored an adult colouring book made by a local artist. Win!

When in Nimbin you can't help, but notice all the locals with their dreaded heads, tie-dye and hemp clothing walking around barefoot going through their daily life. I'm loving it! And then you get approached to buy Nimbin cookies or something a little more traditional to smoke away all your worries. :)

Princess Fiona had meanwhile cooked up some mean burgers at the Bowling Club and with the burgers in our belly topped up with special chocolate chip cookies, we went ahead for another little stroll before our bus took us back to Byron at 3 pm. We rushed through the remaining parts of the village and even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to the Nimbin Candle Factory before heading back. By then the cookies kicked in and you could tell everyone had their medicine from Nimbin as the whole busload of happy travellers were asleep or dreaming away. Last cuddles to Jerry and we were back at Cape Byron YHA.

If you ever want to visit Nimbin when in Byron and don't have your own transport, Happy Coach is the way to go, otherwise take your own hippie van or a 4WD like me and Michael have done it several times and stay for a little while. Feel the time around you slow down and enjoy the lush green hinterlands. Has anyone of you been to Nimbin? What are your thoughts? If not, would you ever go?
